    Excellent excellent distillation. I have often referred to Project management as tending to the organism. But your points are so much more articulate and, frankly, inspiring. Thanks so much!!

    I’m a student who is doing a degree in construction studies degree. I found what you said about enjoying politics interesting and gave me a bit of reassurance as this is my second degree with my first being a Bcom in politics, philosophy and economics. I often find myself asking the question whether or not I picked the right path but your video has given me the reassurance I need to pursue my career goals! 🎉

    Simply why my friend got a job and he said those on the job literally knows nothing. Daft of the theories and principles of the field just because they marketed a false representation on their CV. It's not a marketing job. Just ashamed of hiring managers and the job market today, period. Very informative anyway and deserves a double like. I would give royalty for 2 years if you can rewrite my CV that gets me a job

    Jason, Thank you so much for this video, and it has definitely given me a lot of thought. I have been a project manager for 2.5 years, fresh after completing college as a mechanical engineer; due to the Pandemic and experience barriers for entry-level positions, I got my current PM role by happenstance. So far, I have overseen 3 main projects (about $250k-$500k budgets each) but I have found myself disillusioned for a variety of reasons. As discussed, I have challenges with interpersonal skills and politics, and while I have curried favor with spoken interest to help sites improve, I am a lot more introverted and have challenges with confrontation. I also am a perfectionist and lack that confidence to make hard calls; I never had much guidance or preparation for the construction projects I oversaw, so asking the right skeptical questions in the moment is a challenge. That isn't even getting into the fact I have been saddled with tracking the budget for nearly every other capital project in the company or the lack of company focus with process improvements. But I am someone who enjoys learning and understanding processes, and have demonstrated skepticism when I have even the slightest amount of background. Is there a tell-tale way to know if my position is a lost cause, or if I am definitely not a fit in my role? Are there ways to improve on those political skills despite personal mindset or challenges? How do you utilize your downtime between large projects, or if budget limitations prevent substantial progress? I would appreciate any insights from you (or the comments), and greatly appreciate anyone's time to read this.

      I would like to know too! ^^ I relate to your message and have been contemplating similar thoughts. I am a project coordinator and new to project management. I am trying to find my next steps to grow in the field but starting to doubt my future and interpersonal skills. I am interested in processes/operations, continuous learning, and supporting others and teams, but I've been having some imposter syndrome and doubts about continuing in PM since I am an introvert and perfectionist as well which leads me to be emotionally/socially drained by the end of my days. I am curious if this is normal to experience and part of the learning curve or if I am not a fit to grow as a PM and a leader.

    I seem to be having a problem with the narcissistic people, typically Head of PMO / Hiring Managers / VP's etc. These people have become far worse in their attitude in the last 10-15 years, than ever before. I have 43 years as a successful Project Manager, I have half a dozen patents, and have made companies literally millions of dollars, and customer awards to go with it. One interview, the very first thing the head of PMO said was, "I don't consider you a Project Manager", this was before we even spoke! Another one, the first thing he asked was, "Tell me what year you graduated college", you can guess how that went. And a recruiter said, you have too much experience, I don't know what this stuff means, can you remove about half of it from your resume.....

    • @PMPerspective
      @PMPerspective 2 місяці тому

      I'm sorry to hear about these challenging situations. I'm hearing stories like this more often than I'd like. I'm finding that the latest generation of PMO leadership has little real-world experience leading change.

      @@PMPerspective I am leaving the business field in which I have spent the last 13 years, telecom. I'm currently looking for an IT Project Manager position with a non-telecom organization. To answer your question, no, I have not yet received a job offer because the procedure involves three interviews. I'm on my third interview today at 1 p.m. ET. The two most useful questions and responses from the interview were about soft skills and team motivation. Thanks Jason

I'm so happy :D I'm in the process of finding out that all the staff i didn't enjoy in my previous jobs i would probably find in PM career and this feels like I'm 16 again and after enrolling in university i felt like i finally found out my passion (this was psychology for me). This video gave me encouragment and inspiration. Wish me luck, i'm enrolling for my first PM course this month :)

    I'm in the UK, Construction Project Manager. It's a lot easier to have less of the traits mentioned here in construction project management in my opinion. Ultimately in construction its a salvage of a failure from the day it starts. Success is measured on completion. Not hitting deadlines and meeting all deliverables from initial planning. Smooth...it is not. Not for the faint hearted either 😂

    Thank you for creating this video! My manager mentioned she thought I could handle a Project Management role, so I’ve been doing research to see if I’d be a good fit. After watching this video, I’m still on the fence though. I do have a genuine interest and care about people. I’m introverted, so I’d much rather email, but that doesn’t stop me from picking up the phone or hopping on a Teams/Zoom call when needed. I understand politics and my goal is to make sure MOST everyone is happy (you can’t please every single person though). Change is inevitable and I see it happen often on many of the projects I work on (I work with multiple Project Managers). Things happen and sometimes you just have to go along for the ride. I don’t enjoy making mistakes, but I do own up to them, apologize, and learn from them. I do trust myself to make decisions on a project, and if I’m wrong, I apologize and try again. I want a more stable job and I’m looking to get a certification to make me feel and look more accomplished (I only have a high school diploma). I just don’t know which path to take.

    another important skill is seeing priorities. In many situations with conflicting interests or equally important priorities this might be what you describe as an art, it’s very situational, people tend to talk and talk and feel blocked in such situations.
